What is Canada PR?

Canada provides a Permanent Resident status to individuals who have obtained a Canada PR visa while immigrating to the country. Having a Permanent Resident status allows candidates to live and work in Canada with most of the same rights and privileges as Canadian citizens, although it is not the same as having Canadian citizenship. After residing in Canada with a PR status for a minimum of 4 years, an individual can apply for Canadian citizenship if they meet the eligibility criteria.

Canada also offers a five-year multiple-entry visa called the Canada Permanent Residence visa, which enables skilled foreign workers to work and settle in Canada. It is possible to extend or renew the visa after the initial five years. After three years of staying and working with a Canadian PR card, a person is eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship.

  • What are the various pathways to Canadian immigration?

To apply for Canada PR, one must select a program that matches their eligibility and profile. There are several pathways available, including:

Express Entry: This program manages federal program applications and allows people to immigrate to Canada to fill job vacancies in fields with a lack of skilled workers. There are three federal programs under this:

    • Federal Skilled Worker Program
    • Federal Skilled Trades Program
    • Canadian Experience Class

Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) Visa: Many Canadian immigration applicants obtain a job offer to apply for a work visa. LMIA through Service Canada allows applicants to secure a job offer from a Canadian employer. This is an ideal pathway that can lead to Canada's PR.

Provincial Nominee Programs: The Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) is a great way for skilled immigrants to move to Canada. It invites both students and employees to move to a province and address labour shortages in the territory.
