A work VISA is a government-issued legal document that allows foreign nationals to enter, reside and work legally in a particular country. It is not permanent. It carries validity for a certain period of duration based on the VISA type. A work VISA is usually temporary, and renewal is possible based on requirements. It may be issued as a stamp on the passport or as a separate document.
A foreign national must meet all the stated requirements by the respective country’s government to be eligible and get approval for a work VISA. Succeeding eligibility, one needs to submit the visa application and supporting documents and may even need to undergo an in-person interview depending on the country of application. This process takes place in the home country of the applicant. Once approved, the applicant can move to the respective country and begin work legally. All countries require a work permit visa for foreign workers; employers can not hire you without one.
In the case of a few selected countries, a short-term work VISA is issued directly upon application at the embassy. Whereas in the case of long-term employment, one needs to find a job first of all, then the employers will need to apply for the visa on behalf of the applicant.
Unpaid internships and volunteer positions may or may not require a work permit, depending on the rules & regulations of the destination country.
It usually takes longer to get a work visa and requires more documentation than other VISA types.
In some countries, it is mandatory to accept employment by a foreign resident to get a Work VISA/Permit. On the other hand, certain countries ask to first apply for a Long Stay VISA, then after arriving in the country, they can obtain a Work Permit.
In some cases, Work VISAs are particular and strict with the jobs. So, the applicant cannot do any occupation other than the authorized one, as mentioned in the VISA, in the same country. In these cases, the employer from the destination country has to sponsor the application for VISA along with a cover letter.
On the other hand, some countries issue General Work VISA that permits the applicant to take up any job in the destination country and work till the validity period.
In other words, we can say that the rules regarding work visas vary depending on the country of issue.
