Types Of Student Visa


There is only one Canadian visa type that students can apply for to get admission to a Canadian university. However, there are three categories that one should know. They as given below:

  • SDS: The Student Direct Stream (SDS) offers express entry to Canada quickly and directly. The visa application process will also be quicker. Several SDS colleges in Canada offer almost all top courses and specialisations.
  • Non-SDS: Non-SDS is the general category for all types of visas for studying, working, and residing in Canada. Those who missed their chance to apply through SDS can choose Non-SDS. If processed in this category, one is not required to show the bank balance in their home country.
  • University Category: The university category is different from Non-SDS in that you need to have an IELTS score of at least 6.0, which is not required for Non-SDS.

Intake details:

  • Intake 1: Fall Semester – It is the prime intake of all and commences in August/September. All the major courses are available in this intake.

Eligibility Requirements For Students In Universities

  • Students must be over 18 years of age
  • International students can work on-campus up to 20 hours/week or less during the academic terms and full-time during the academic-break periods, including the summertime.
  • Off-campus employment requires some form of written or documented authorization issued by either the USCIS or OISS.
  • A valid passport with a minimum validity of 6 months after your stay in the country.

  • Proof of adequate cash in a bank account to cover the course duration. For example, Bank statements, sponsors, and a scholarship program.
  • Evidence indicating the candidate intends to depart the country after the course completion.

Student Visa Requirements

  • Acceptance letter from a recognized DLI: An acceptance letter from a recognized DLI is one of the most crucial documents one needs to apply for a Canadian student visa.
  • Passport: One needs a valid passport, the expiry date of which should not fall during your stay in Canada. However, one also can get it renewed if the expiry date falls in the period during the study in Canada.
  • Proof of funds: One needs to prove that one has enough funds to cover the complete tuition and living expenses in Canada. Canadian Immigration expects a student to have CAD$ 20635 every year.
  • Immigration Medical Examination (IME): One has to be medically fit to move to Canada and study there. They should book an appointment, visit the listed doctors, and get tested a week before the start of the visa application.

Steps To Apply

Processing Time

Obtaining a Canadian Student Visa takes approximately 7 weeks. However, if applied through Student Direct Stream, you can get your visa in as little as approx 30 to 45 days. The processing time usually depends on the number of applications the IRCC approves or rejects.
